The following article and interview with SVI 2013 True Confession speaker, John Fluevog, first appeared on JunxionStrategy.com by company Principal and SVI Executive Producer Mike Rowlands. Our shoes are satan proof. You re wearing them now, right? Look around. Do you see him?
What do you get when you cross a couple of creative hipsters and a warehouse full of turn-of-the-century footwear? If it s 1970 in Vancouver and the hipsters in question are Peter Fox and John Fluevog, you get the beginnings of what has grown to be an international broadway shoes footwear brand renowned for its creativity, longevity and a bold, cool attitude that continues to stand the test of time.
In the lead up to the 19th annual Social Venture Institute September 18-22 at Hollyhock , I had the pleasure to connect with the man behind the world s most dizzyingly distinctive range of footwear Vancouver fashion icon, John Fluevog. John will deliver a keynote True Confessions talk at SVI, sharing with 150 social entrepreneurs the lessons broadway shoes he s learned from his nearly 50 years of design, entrepreneurship and international business. A Long Story
We ve long hoped that John would be able to join us at SVI. In fact, SVI s intrepid Executive Producer Joel Solomon has been coaxing John to attend for years. Some things take time to come together, and after a too-busy schedule, 2013 is finally the right year for John. As it turns out, there s a lesson in this for all entrepreneurs. True influence takes time.
Although he ll play a role as teacher and mentor at SVI, John s also eager to learn. I d like to learn more about our current culture, he explained, including how he can connect broadway shoes to it, and influence it for the better. In a setting that will be infused with progressive agendas, and ambitions for social change, John s innate understanding that culture influences broadway shoes his work, and that his work can have a mutual influence on culture, is sure to spark some important insights.
Certainly, Fluevog has become a legendary cultural broadway shoes reference in Vancouver, along with the iconic products that he s designed. This is not a snap your fingers sort of influence; it takes perseverance and time to position a brand to influence culture. But taking this long view can be powerful. I take care to ensure my vision and personality are infused into our products and our marketing, he said. And clearly broadway shoes for Fluevog, it has worked: cultural icons like Robert Altman, Madonna and Perry Farrell are all Voggers. broadway shoes Put Something broadway shoes of Yourself Into It
I focus less on the running of the business, and more on the products, the messages and the stories, said John. Entrepreneurs should always think about how what they re doing is going to help them stand out in the marketplace.
The personal connection individual entrepreneurs have to their businesses and their customers, and their commitment to leading their brands with their own style and panache is surely broadway shoes fundamental to their early success. And many of the world s most admired brands maintain that close connection as they grow: think Virgin and Richard Branson, or the eponymous hippies behind Ben & Jerry s Ice Cream . Fluevog has followed a similar path: Do whatever you do with good taste and style, and put something of yourself into it. It s hard to read Fluevog.com and miss John s tongue-in-cheek style. broadway shoes Says one FAQ, Are John Fluevog Angels really broadway shoes Satan resistant? Answer: You re wearing Angels right now, right? Look around. Do you see him?!
John broadway shoes hopes to demonstrate this by example at SVI. I m putting myself up to tell my story more than I have before. broadway shoes One of my goals is to move culture forward, and I believe this form is one way to do it. Sustainability broadway shoes in the Rapid Cycle Fashion broadway shoes Business
In an industry renowned for its rapid cycle between in vogue and out of style, Fluevog s very aware of the challenges broadway shoes he and other designers face to develop sustainable products. The reality of the industry necessitates lots of shipping, international sourcing of parts, and so on. Fluevog tries to use relatively sustainable components in the shoes, like non-chrome broadway shoes leathers, and soles and heels that can be replaced. But his best opportunity touches on one of the recurring themes in sustainability circles effective design.
The designs are moving more towards Fluevog styles that have a longer fashion life. Less throwaway fashion means more use. And with replaceable soles and heels, there are many Voggers walking the streets of Vancouver in Angels broadway shoes they first wore over 20 years ago.
The attendees of this year s SVI will be lucky to hear the stories and ideas of this celebr

Then what are your criteria meet monica velour for a well-constructed and well-designed shoe? I don

Wikipedia describes the work of Canadian shoe designer John Fluevog as “progressive, art deco inspired styles” and if you’ve ever seen a pair of his shoes then you know they’re not for the faint of heart. John Fluevog shoes for men and women are bold, colourful, fun and meant to create a footwear fantasy for its wearer.
Celebrities such as Whoopi Goldberg, Madonna, Scarlet Johanssen and Robin Williams, to name a few, have worn his creations. However, when I interviewed John at gravitypope’s Toronto store opening he isn’t the least bit concerned with the trappings of Hollywood, nor does he care. He has an independent spirit, doesn’t follow trends and likes the idea of anti-fashion, which is why he ranks at the top of my list of footwear designers to interview; people who march to the beat of their own drum have always intrigued me. With John Fluevog at the gravitypope Toronto store opening
The Souls of My Shoes: What made gravitypope one of the stores you wanted meet monica velour to partner with and have carry your shoes? John Fluevog: I ve known Louise (Dirks) for a long time and I was probably one of the first brands to ever be in her store. Louise is a great buyer but beyond meet monica velour that she buys brands and is loyal to them, she doesn’t dart from brand to brand and will continually buy season after season which, I think, is key to having a retail store that works and functions, you get that continuity.
How would you describe the evolution of John Fluevog Shoes? Well, I hope it hasn’t evolved too much. I hope it remains somewhat similar to when I started out. Do the styles change? Yes they do. Does the essence meet monica velour of them in terms of the fun factor or emotional factor change? I hope it hasn’t. The brand, meet monica velour my shoes and the business is all part of me.
Your style of shoes have a particular look and feel, some people don t gravitate towards it, but it works for those who want fun footwear and who want to stand out. We have Fluevog Fanatics, people who have hundreds of pairs of my shoes and collect them. They like them because it forms part of their identity and who they are, but really at the end of the day it s actually cheap thrills (both of us laugh) .
That s not a bad thing because the price of shoes these days can be astronomical. I can t even think about buying certain pairs of designer shoes at full price, I d have to save up. I don t like those kinds of price points. Yes they re a luxury, but my shoes are an affordable luxury. I call them hip luxury, it s my ethos and by hip I mean not looking like everyone else but standing out.
Then what are your criteria meet monica velour for a well-constructed and well-designed shoe? I don t have exact criteria. I like thinking that when you buy a product, a pair of my shoes, it will work and last. For me a well-crafted shoe would tend to be more robust and stronger.
I like the idea of anti-fashion. I’ve found over the years that the shoes which were difficult to sell at the time become the most endearing when I see it on somebody s feet five, eight or 10 years later. They look terrific because meet monica velour they transcend the current fashion trends and on their own look good. Specially designed Blue Brandenburg Lights in studio
Is there a particular style of shoes you like or favour? I don t really. Though being me, I like shoes that look familiar or things that I’ve designed and have my finger prints on them. I tend to like things that have more shape; I m more interested in the shape and lines of something than the details.
Is there a style of shoes that you dislike? I dislike things with no shape, an exaggerated example would be UGG boots they have no shape! When something doesn’t follow the human body or flatter it, it doesn’t do anything for me. Shapes gives personality, shapes tell the stories. Pilgrim
So what s your most memorable shoe? The very first shoe I designed I still love, it s called meet monica velour the Pilgrim and I reissued it last year. The Pilgrim has a pointed toe that s turned up at the end and has a big buckle, quite punkie looking. It s memorable for me because I recall designing it, the boldness of it was completely against the mainstream at the time.
Another shoe that I like is my Mini . I did them when pointed toes and really high heels were all the rage. I decided to design these rounded toe shoes that were really wacky, they were so bold for me to do at the time yet they sold. Mini
What are some projects you have planned for the near future? meet monica velour We just finished opening a store in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and are selling more shoes internationally. However, for me it s about my team and being able to accurately articulate meet monica velour the vision which I see in pictures I have for the future so we can move forward. I like the idea that footwear can help evolve people and culture.
Recently there have been a lot of collaborations between designers and celebrities meet monica velour with mas

Love them or hate them, quirky John Fluevog shoes have become a staple at boutique footwear stores across the continent. Known for his unconventional designs and offbeat bravado detailing, over the years the shoe designer has developed somewhat of a cult following. Now in his 41st year spearheading the eponymous company, Fluevog is celebrating a colourful history with the opening bravado of the world s first permanent Flueseum. Located bravado inside Calgary s new Fluevog store on Stephen Avenue, the Flueseum is a gallery space showcasing a retrospective exhibition of the company and the man behind the eccentric shoes. bravado
Fluevog, now in his 60s, has seen the company expand from a single store in Seattle to over 10 locations across North America. His shoes are distributed worldwide. Throughout this growth, it has always been important to the designer to maintain high standards of quality and craftsmanship, authenticity and loyalty to his consumers, all the while staying true to himself and, of course, keeping things a little weird.
Generally one to buck trends, the Vancouver-based designer doesn t seem to care what others think (a memorable quote inside the Flueseum reads You may not like these shoes too bad. I do. ) When pointed-toe, spiky, high-heeled shoes were all the rage in the early 2000s, Fluevog deliberately chose not to go down that already well-trodden road, maintaining his creative integrity at the expense of not cashing bravado in on the fad.
Keeping the company small allows the designer complete creative liberty, providing him an unbridled outlet for artistic expression. From zany colours to a multitude of out-there shapes, nothing appears to be off limits.
It s pretty amazing to be able to live in an era where I can have a small company and I can say what I want and do what I want, he says. I ve got no one critiquing me, but I like to leave it a bit open to interpretation so other people can add value to it.
Though the secret to Fluevog s success can be attributed to his ingenuity and distinct style, there is much to be said about having a sense of morality. Whether it s providing jobs for people in small manufacturing facilities in Peru, or developing environmentally friendly practices within the business, Fluevog s company is dedicated to social responsibility.
People want to align themselves with companies that they value, he says. [Consumers] are much more conscious of where they spend their money, because money is power and we vote with our dollars. If a company has no values, bravado then they themselves bravado are somewhat valueless.
Though not concerned with others opinions, Fluevog hopes not only that his brand is ethically responsible, but that his story is inspiring. A firm believer in humanity, with all its quirks, its ups and its downs, Fluevog places a great deal of importance on transparency and sincerity. The Flueseum at Calgary s new store provides the perfect example.
Chronicling the evolution of Fluevog s shoe designs, dating from his earliest creations bravado in the 80s, the museum also tells the story of someone who is unafraid to take risks and uncompromising in their creative expression. Read between the lines and you ll begin to see a greater vision. bravado

They say your first time marks you for the rest of your life. I think this is true. My first encounter with John was when I wore a pair of his black Mini Babycake leather boots. Their decorative buttons and rubber F-sole helped to define what I now consider my perfect type. In his leather boots, John dared me as he did with hundreds of others before–to fall in love with his inimitable style. Like the tale of the Emperor s New Clothes, I was blind to the fact that, until this moment, I had been walking through life barefoot. John gave me a glimpse of his imagination when his Mini Babycakes became mine. He would have me wrapped around his pinky toe for life.
I made a point of visiting places where I knew I could find him: Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Seattle, Minneapolis, Chicago and New York. Regardless tween 80 of the city, the unique desire that I felt the first time was always burning inside of me. I had become a Fluevoger and as a result, my shoe collection grew bigger.
My sweet and sassy side bloomed when I skipped in my Beatles orange Operetta Fiorenza s . My inner bohemian-chic child felt free, click-clacking tween 80 through Ottawa s ByWard Market courtyards in my wooden Ask Answer Clogs . The heavy metal zipper on my Cece Boots mirrored my determination and strength on dark winter days when I trudged through the snow. My Cheetah Print Arch Boots were a perfect fit when I wanted to shout out the wild in me–the artist and the activist–that couldn t be tamed. Not surprisingly, I grew to admire my Prepare Volunteer Boots as much as my old vinyl record collection. They express my passion for all that is groovy in an everyday people sort of way.
In tween 80 case you haven t noticed, I am head over heels for John Fluevog Shoes. My adoration tween 80 for Fluevog s wearable art is so strong tween 80 that I was fully prepared to remain in an intercity affair for the rest of my existence tween 80 (or at least until I turned 100 and could no longer fit my bunions into his boots.) In all honesty, I never dreamed John would be interested in a commitment and want to settle down in Ottawa, Canada s Capital.
At this point in my article, let me take my foot out of my mouth because ON JULY 1 st OTTAWA WILL HAVE ITS OWN JOHN FLUEVOG SHOES STORE AT THE CORNER OF WILLIAM AND GEORGE STREET tween 80 IN THE BYWARD MARKET!
I first heard the news while trying on a pair of chunky blue Guide shoes in Minneapolis. tween 80 Initially, I was taken aback by the thought of having to share John with everybody at home, especially tween 80 after our long history together. But then a realization struck me, like the one that struck John Fluevog when he designed the Guide shoe–my desire for exclusivity could result in my own personal, Great-Fluevog Massacre.
You see the Guide was inspired after John purchased several boxes of Girl Guide cookies to share with his fabulous employees. As he headed back to work, hunger struck hard and he ate every last one. The story goes that John disposed of the cookie boxes. He was found out in the end after the staff noticed crumbs all over his tie. John dubbed this event that led to the design of his Guide shoes as the Great-Cookie Massacre. tween 80
After July 1 st , I will have to learn to share John Fluevog with my Ottawa brothers, sisters and tourists alike. The good news though is because there are actually two designers tween 80 at John Fluevog Shoes, tween 80 John and God, (says me AND fluevog.com), there should never be a shortage of unique so

Mark asked me to write a history essay for him. I noticed he never paid attention the sak when I was

I hadn t thought of these shoes in years. At the time, they seemed so precious, so adorable, the perfect way to hide what I believed were my ginormous feet. They were John Fluevogs in Mary Jane style. the sak They were stiff black leather with red flowers embroidered on the top, such delicate, feminine little things a modern twist on silk brocade. They reminded me of those cloth shoes you find in Chinatown but they came with a $200 price tag.
I had just finished university and was still living at home when I came upon them. At the time I made money tutoring the sak rich exchange students. I focused on grammar, conversation and reading comprehension. And then I met Mark, who was living on his father s dime. Mark found one of my handwritten, photocopied ads that I had posted all over campus advertising my tutoring services. He emailed and asked for help with his History 101 course. Whatever Mark had promised his parents before he boarded that plane, I m pretty sure that it wasn t to neglect his studies, party with other students, spend all day playing computer games, flunk history and pay someone else to write his essays. But that’s what he did.
Mark asked me to write a history essay for him. I noticed he never paid attention the sak when I was tutoring him, preferring to answer phone calls and make plans with his friends instead. Eventually all this slacking off caught up to him as mid-term season rolled around.
I struggled with making a decision, anguishing for days over whether to write the essay or not. After consulting my business-savvy cousin and another ogling session at the shoe store, I decided to do it. I could ve taught Mark to fish instead of reeling in the pike myself but he seemed determined not to learn anything.
My asking price was $180, twenty dollars less than the asking price of those John Fluevogs. It was as if this low-balling would salve over feelings of guilt. I worked hard for the cash, toiling for hours over the essay, a weekend spent at the university library even though I was no longer a student. History wasn’t my forte, so I had to brush up on my World War I facts. I had done enough writing in my own academic undergrad career to know that some essays weren t about critical thinking at all, rather they were paper containers for dates, names and places. the sak Still, before the convenience of Wikipedia, it meant that I would have to actually read through multiple books before distilling an entire war into five pages.
Even after I handed over the essay to Mark, I was plagued with anxiety and stress. I hadn t guaranteed him a certain mark or percentage, but I feared his professor would know that I was the miscreant the sak scribe. Mark didn t seem to care and was happy submit something;in his mind, this was a fair trade for his father s dollar bills and hours of video gaming.
After I bought the shoes a wave of euphoria and guilt washed over me. I did not escape unpunished for this deed. The shoes hurt like hell. Trying them on, I told myself I just needed to break them in but they ended up scraping up my feet and giving me blisters. I only wore them a handful of times before I finally threw in the towel. Today, they live in my parents closet, gathering dust, the formerly shiny leather and exquisite embroidery dulling over time. When I first brought them home, my mom asked me how much they were. I lied and told them they were about 140 percent cheaper than they actually were. Even at that fake sale price, she said they weren’t worth it.
